In 1886, the company founders, Reinhard and Max Mannesmann, invented and improved the original process for manufacturing seamless tubes. Industrial development was decisively influenced by this epoch-making invention, for only the advent of the seamless tube made many processes and products technically and economically feasible. Today, Mannesmannröhren-Werke GmbH (MRW) manages the Salzgitter Groups Tubes Division. The Division has numerous subsidiaries and affiliated companies which manufacture and/or process all types of welded and seamless tube and pipe on four continents. The companies, some of which are run as German or international joint ventures, each specialize in their own tube products, and these are supplied around the globe for applications of every kind.
