One of the important places within the Czech machine tool industry is held by - from the very moment of its establishment - TOS KUŘIM - OS, a.s., the manufacturer of precise machine tools. TOS KUŘIM - OS, a.s. is located 15 kilometers to the north-west of city Brno. The company belongs to the oldest manufacturers of milling machines, special machines, and automatic machining transfer lines in the Czech Republic. The factory in Kuřim was established as a subsidiary plant of Zbrojovka Brno in 1942. During 60 years of machine tools production in Kuřim, the company staff has gained much experience in such areas as research, development, design, manufacturing, and operation of more than 83 000 machine tools, 60 automatic machining transfer lines, and 3 500 single-purpose machines. Since its establishment, TOS Kuřim has been a pioneer in introducing new techniques into practice. Its trade-mark has become a sign of reliable, precise, and long-life machine tools. At the beginning of the seventies, for example, the integrated production system for complex machining of box-type workpieces was put into operation as a predecessor of the present flexible production systems manufactured by well-known companies such as Comau, Berardi, Renault-Automation, Krause, and Ex-Cell-O. The extensive advancement both in assortment and volume culminated at the end of eighties. At that time, the company had three subsidiary production plants and its own foundry for precise castings. Moreover, TOS Kuřim produced the ball-type screws as the only manufacturer of these products in the former Czechoslovak Republic. The bearing assortment consisted of the machining centres, tool- room, knee-type, and bed-type milling machines, single purpose machines as well as automatic machining transfer lines. The company was transformed during 1996. It became a privately-owned company the 100% owner was the company FOBS LEASING, s.r.o. (s.r.o. = Limited Company). From August 1996, the successor of tradition in precise machine tools manufacturing in Kuřim carried the name TOS KUŘIM - OS, s.r.o. The firm took over the know-how, the registered trade-mark, the companys logotype (based on the licence agreements), and the complete team of specialists. According to the registration in the Commercial Register on December 7, 2000, the company transforms itself into TOS KUŘIM - OS, a.s. (a.s. = corporation) effective from January 1, 2001. This corporation takes over all the obligations, duties, and commitments of TOS KUŘIM - OS, s.r.o. The Czech-trade company ALTA BRNO a.s. has become a major owner of TOS KUŘIM - OS, a.s. shares on 26.7.2005. Machine tools represent the main commodity of ALTA BRNO a.s.
