In the Beginning The innovation that went into the creation of the first Portakabin relocatable building, the PK16, continues today as we develop ever more outstanding accommodation solutions for ever more diverse customers across the UK and Europe. When Donald Shepherd, founder of Portakabin, first conceived his idea of a relocatable building in the 1940s he could not have imagined the role that Portakabin would play in every decade since. Beginning production of the PK16 in 1961, Donald Shepherd had found a market that needed a solution to on-site accommodation and storage. Today, as market leader and pioneer in the development of relocatable and modular accommodation, Portakabin produces some of the most sophisticated building solutions available. Designed and manufactured at the 250,000m2 Portakabin site in York, solutions are offered for an ever wider range of uses, from office space, marketing suites, airports, childcare facilities and classrooms to surgeries and clinics, toilets and showers as well as storage facilities. Innovations & Creations The broad Portakabin product range includes modular buildings such as: Ultima and Ultima Vision, which can accommodate between one and 1,000 people within individual offices or large open-plan spaces. Portakabin Solus, which offers up to 30m2 of office space with improved aesthetics including larger windows and doors. Titan, the largest single modular building in Europe that can be sited with minimal groundwork required. The innovative Titan Solar, the first relocatable building to use solar energy. Portakabin also provides a range of classroom and nursery products, such as the Lilliput Childrens Centres, which are delivered complete with nappy-changing rooms, junior toilet facilities, vibrant colours and wipe-clean surfaces. Achievements On time, on budget: We are justifiably proud of our track record in delivering buildings on time and on budget, particularly when statistics are compared to the construction industry average of only 63% of projects being delivered on time and just 49% on budget (Source: Research carried out by BCIS on behalf of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors Construction Faculty - Sept 2004). Portakabin has delivered 99.6% of buildings on time and on budget, based on orders from January 2004 to June 2008. International standards: Portakabin has also earned recognition for its excellent practices with the ISO 9001: 2000 quality management systems standard, awarded for everything from office procedures right through to our zero tolerance manufacturing process and the ISO14001:2004 environmental management systems standard, awarded for our high-standards of environmental management and commitment to ongoing environmental responsibility. Awards: Over the years, the Portakabin and Shepherd Groups have earned countless awards for everything from Plain Speaking, to Supply Chain Company of the Year, the Engineering Excellence Award, a number of Civic Trust Design Awards and the prestigious Queens Awards for both Export and Achievement.
