Wuyang Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. of HBIS Group is China's first production and research base for wide and heavy steel plates, and a flagship enterprise in the research, development, and manufacturing of wide and heavy steel plates in China. It owns two technologically advanced double-stand wide and heavy steel plate production lines (4100mm+4100mm and 4200mm+4300mm), supported by domestically leading ingot mold casting lines and steel plate heat treatment facilities in the wide and heavy plate industry. The newly commissioned 460mm thick plate continuous casting machine is one of the world's most advanced continuous casters, capable of producing slabs with a maximum cross-section of 460mm×2500mm, specifically tailored for high-end applications such as offshore wind power, nuclear power, pressure vessels, and construction machinery. It fills the global gap in ultra-thick slab continuous casting technology, significantly improving the internal quality of slabs and helping HBIS become a high-end green wide and heavy steel plate production base.
HBIS was originally a defense and military industrial project. In February 1971, the State Council held a special meeting on HBIS's construction, determining the main content of the project. In September 1978, China's independently designed, manufactured, and installed "King of Rolling Mills," the 4200mm wide and heavy plate rolling mill, successfully completed its hot test rolling in a single attempt, ending China's history of being unable to produce extra-wide and extra-thick steel plates.
Over the past fifty years, HBIS has focused on the research, development, and manufacturing of wide and heavy steel plates, adhering to the business philosophy of "people have no me, people have my excellence, people have me special, people have me fine." It upholds the value pursuit of "create a famous brand in China and produce high-quality products in the world," embedding a cultural gene of "pursuing high-end and special steel." This has established significant product and technological leadership advantages. Among the 16 series and over 350 grades of wide and heavy plate products produced by HBIS, more than 220 have replaced imports or been manufactured to foreign standards, and over 60 varieties have been exported to developed countries and regions such as the United States, Germany, and Japan, establishing a strong national brand image and making HBIS a key base for the localization of wide and heavy steel plates to replace imports in China.
HBIS has formulated 9 national standards, including the "National Standard for Steel Plates with Through-thickness Properties," "National Standard for Steel Plates for Building Structures," and "National Standard for Carbon Steel and Low-alloy Steel Plates for Nuclear Power Plants," as well as 10 industry standards. It has received two First Prizes and one Second Prize for National Science and Technology Progress, nearly 100 provincial and ministerial-level science and technology progress awards, and major honors such as the National Quality Award, National May 1st Labor Award, and China Foreign Trade Export Leading Index Sample Enterprise. Multiple series of its products have received the Gold Cup Award for Metallurgical Product Physical Quality.
HBIS's products have been widely used in over 300 major national projects and key technical equipment projects, including China's manned space program, large aircraft project, defense and military projects, national strategic energy projects, the Three Gorges Project, the Beijing 2008 Olympic Project, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, and Beijing Capital International Airport, playing a critical role. In September 2005, the China Iron and Steel Association named HBIS's 4200mm wide and heavy plate rolling mill the "Meritorious Rolling Mill of Chinese Iron and Steel Industry" to commend its outstanding contributions. In September 2008, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council awarded HBIS the only special honor award in the Chinese steel industry for the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics, recognizing its significant contributions.
