It is the earliest subsidiary established under Dongfang Electric Corporation and a leading enterprise in the research, design, and manufacturing of large-scale power generation equipment in China. It is a major global supplier of power generation equipment, clean energy products, and services. In 2024, it was successfully selected as one of the first national exemplary smart factories and green factories.

Dongfang Electric Machinery is primarily engaged in the research, design, manufacturing, and service of hydro turbine generator units, thermal power generators (including coal, gas, and nuclear), wind power generators, AC/DC motors, phase modifiers, complete sets of energy-saving and environmental protection equipment, pumps, and other equipment. It also provides services such as power station retrofitting, complete power station equipment supply, installation, maintenance, and overhaul. The company holds multiple qualifications and capabilities, including general contracting for power engineering, municipal public works construction, environmental engineering, and mechanical and electrical engineering construction. It can provide users with EPC general contracting for small and medium-sized thermal power, waste-to-energy, biomass power, wind power, photovoltaic power, and combined heat and power projects, as well as system solutions for intelligent diagnosis of power generation equipment, solid waste circular economy industrial parks, water environment treatment projects, and comprehensive energy services and management.

As of January 2, 2025, the cumulative output of power generation equipment by Dongfang Electric Machinery has exceeded 700 million kilowatts.
