The Eighth Research Institute of Nuclear Industry was established in May 1963 under the personal directive of Premier Zhou Enlai. It is a specialized materials research institute under China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), located in Jiading District, Shanghai—the city renowned as the "City of Scientific Satellites"—covering an area of approximately 120 mu. In September 2020, with approval from the Ministry of Finance, CNNC Shanghai Eighth Institute Technology Co., Ltd. (abbreviated as CNNC Eighth Institute) was established, operating under a "two brands, one team" governance system. In its early years, facing the harsh conditions of the first wave of China's nuclear industry development, the institute's researchers and staff, with the care and encouragement of higher authorities, worked tenaciously and diligently to overcome key technical challenges in the production of "two bombs and one submarine," making important contributions to the establishment of a complete nuclear industrial system in China. After the reform and opening-up, the institute actively engaged in the wave of socialist market economy, developing series products such as filters, metal powders, electronic pastes, and composite materials. It successively established joint ventures including Kennametal Stellite Co., Ltd., Shanghai Baoyin Electronic Materials Co., Ltd., Shanghai Yiming Filter Technology Co., Ltd., and others. These products lead domestically in technology, forming a diversified industrial layout and achieving preservation and appreciation of state-owned assets. Over 60 years, the institute has developed various specialized equipment and components, providing technical support for the upgrading and large-scale operation of China's uranium enrichment production technology. Relying on technological innovation for continuous development, it has cultivated generations of top talents, accumulating more than 100 important scientific and technological awards, including the First Prize of National Technological Invention Award and National Science and Technology Progress Award. It has senior professionals such as Shanghai Craftsmen and recipients of special government allowances. The institute has successively passed certifications for quality, environmental, and occupational health and safety management systems, and has been honored with titles such as National Model Workers' Home, Shanghai Garden Unit, Shanghai Advanced Unit in Democratic Management of Factory Affairs, and has been rated as a Shanghai Civilized Unit for 23 consecutive years.
