Wedoany.com Report, On March 5th, Hexcel Corporation of the United States officially launched the new generation carbon fiber product HexTow® IM11-R, which is positioned as the latest member of its high-performance carbon fiber series.
Hexcel possesses a complete industrial system in the fields of carbon fiber and prepreg, with its products widely used in large aircraft structural components and high-performance industrial composites. The launch of IM11-R not only updates the company's product line but also reflects that the global high-performance carbon fiber industry is entering a new stage of technological competition.
HexTow® IM11-R belongs to the intermediate modulus, high strength carbon fiber category, representing a further upgrade by Hexcel based on its IM series. The IM series carbon fibers have long been renowned in the industry for their balanced strength and processing performance. Although the company has not yet disclosed specific mechanical parameters, judging from its application direction, its core objective is to improve the strength utilization rate and reliability of composite structural components.
Released simultaneously with IM11-R is Hexcel's self-developed R-type sizing system. Sizing agents are a critical part of carbon fiber production, directly affecting the interfacial bonding strength between the fiber and the resin matrix. Through this proprietary sizing system, Hexcel aims to enhance interfacial transfer efficiency, allowing the fiber's mechanical properties to be more effectively transferred into the composite material.
Hexcel particularly emphasized the application potential of IM11-R carbon fiber in the field of Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels (COPV). Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels are typically composed of liner materials and continuous carbon fiber winding layers. Compared to traditional metal containers, they offer advantages such as light weight, corrosion resistance, and long fatigue life, commonly used in satellite attitude control systems and high-pressure gas storage.
Hexcel has collaborated with HyPerComp Engineering to apply IM11-R carbon fiber to Type IV fully-wound Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels. This type of vessel utilizes a polymer liner and a carbon fiber winding structure, representing a significant technological route for lightweight pressure vessels. It can reduce weight and avoid corrosion issues while ensuring strength, demonstrating significant advantages in aerospace propellant tanks and high-pressure gas storage systems.
