Wedoany.com Report on Mar 19th, FedEx has partnered with Returnity to launch a reusable packaging system for business freight in the United States, aiming to replace single-use cardboard boxes and integrate circular logistics. Targeted at B2B shippers in the retail and soft goods sectors, the system leverages FedEx's existing infrastructure to eliminate additional handling fees and promote the large-scale adoption of reusable packaging.
Neil Gibson, Senior Vice President of Global Customer Experience at FedEx, stated: "Our collaboration with Returnity has created the first scalable reusable box solution for our B2B customers, which is particularly beneficial for our soft goods shippers. By combining Returnity's durable, easily integrated packaging with our global network, we help retailers achieve significant cost savings while reducing environmental impact, without sacrificing speed or reliability. This new solution supports our vision of building smarter supply chains for everyone."
The system utilizes durable, foldable containers, with each box capable of up to 50 shipping cycles, carrying loads of up to 50 pounds, and compatible with automated sorting systems. Designed for closed-loop environments, it is suitable for store replenishment, internal transfers, and field service operations, ensuring packaging circulates within a controlled network.
According to pilot data, the reusable packaging system can reduce packaging costs by up to 30% per shipping cycle and cut carbon emissions by 64% to 88% compared to single-use corrugated packaging. These benefits strengthen the business case for adoption amid tightening regulations and cost pressures.
Mike Newman, CEO of Returnity, said: "FedEx is making reuse meaningful by building the business case, doing the work, and creating a model for how circular logistics can succeed at scale." The system has been tested with multiple B2B shippers in North America, with participants reporting faster unpacking and replenishment processes, improved labor efficiency, and reduced product damage.
FedEx plans to expand the reusable packaging system to Australia and Europe in response to pressure for supply chain decarbonization. This move positions the company at the forefront of logistics competition, requiring the simultaneous delivery of operational efficiency and climate performance. This scalable model could become a key feature of next-generation logistics systems.
