Wedoany.com Report on Mar 19th, Southwest Airlines plans to launch several long-haul routes operated by the Boeing 737 MAX 8 within its network in 2026. The longest segment connects Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) with Honolulu's Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), covering approximately 2,918 miles (4,696 kilometers). All these routes exceed 2,600 miles (4,185 kilometers), demonstrating the aircraft's advantages in range and fuel efficiency. This enables the airline to utilize single-aisle aircraft for transoceanic flights from mainland U.S. cities directly to Hawaii, offering passengers the convenience of avoiding layovers on the West Coast.
According to 2026 flight schedule information compiled by Cirium, Southwest Airlines has scheduled high-frequency services on these long-distance routes. For example, the Phoenix to Honolulu route is planned for 273 flights annually in each direction, generating approximately 139.4 million Available Seat Miles (ASMs). Another significant route connects Phoenix with Kahului Airport (OGG) on Maui, covering about 2,845 miles (4,578 kilometers), also operating 273 flights annually in each direction. These Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft are configured with 175 seats, effectively supporting high-capacity operations.
Las Vegas, as a key hub for Southwest Airlines, has also launched several long-haul Boeing 737 MAX 8 routes to Hawaii. Among them, the Las Vegas to Honolulu route is the busiest, with 701 flights annually in each direction, utilizing over 338 million ASMs. Other routes include services to Lihue Airport (LIH) on Kauai, Kona International Airport (KOA) on the Big Island of Hawaii, and Kahului Airport (OGG) on Maui, with distances ranging from 2,695 to 2,818 miles and a total of over 500 flights annually. These Boeing 737 MAX 8 routes not only meet the travel demand for direct flights to Hawaii from inland cities like Phoenix and Las Vegas but also optimize the airline's operational network through high aircraft utilization and a single-aircraft-type strategy.
