en.Wedoany.com Report, On March 20, the first phase of the trillion-yuan-level coal-chemical-textile integration project in Turpan City, Xinjiang, China—a 2.4 million tons/year high-quality fiber-grade coal-to-ethylene glycol project—officially commenced construction. This project is invested in and constructed by Zhejiang Hengyi Group, a Fortune Global 500 company, with a total investment of 25.7 billion yuan. It is currently the world's largest single-train high-quality fiber-grade coal-to-ethylene glycol project under construction and is expected to be completed and put into operation by the end of 2028.

Project Overview: World's Largest Single-Train Project, 25.7 Billion Yuan Investment to Leverage Trillion-Yuan Cluster

Scale and Capacity: The project primarily produces 2.4 million tons/year of high-quality polyester-grade ethylene glycol, with by-products including dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and coal-based ethanol. Upon reaching full capacity, it is expected to generate over 12 billion yuan in annual output value.

Construction Period: The construction period is 30 months, with an expected operational date by the end of 2028. It will create more than 1,700 jobs.

Strategic Layout: Hengyi plans to invest a cumulative total of 150 billion yuan in Turpan over 5 to 8 years, constructing the coal-chemical-textile integration base in two phases. The second phase will involve the layout of coal-to-aromatics and downstream high-end new materials such as polyester filament and nylon.

Technology Highlights: International Advanced Process + Low-Carbon Technology, Realizing Chain Transformation from "Coal to Cloth"

Core Technology Route: It adopts internationally advanced coal gasification and syngas-to-ethylene glycol technologies. Using lignite from the Aidinghu mining area in Turpan as feedstock, syngas is produced through processes such as gasification, shift conversion, and purification. Ethylene glycol is then produced through steps including dimethyl oxalate synthesis.

Low-Carbon Supporting Facilities: It will simultaneously construct CCS carbon capture and storage, green power coupling, and circular economy systems, promoting the transformation of coal from a traditional fuel to a high-end chemical raw material and new chemical fiber material, building a green industrial chain from "a lump of coal to two filaments to a bolt of cloth."

Equipment Configuration: The gasification section is equipped with four sets of 3,000 tons/day Hangtian Maiwei furnaces. Purification employs Dalian University of Technology's low-temperature methanol washing technology. The single-train ethylene glycol production capacity reaches 600,000 tons. Supporting ammonia synthesis and nitric acid plants form a raw material recycling system.

Industrial Significance: Breaking Raw Material Bottlenecks, Radiating to Central Asian Markets

Corporate Strategy: This project is a key initiative for Hengyi to implement its strategy of "extending, supplementing, and strengthening the industrial chain" and to break the bottleneck in polyester raw materials. It will reduce reliance on externally purchased petroleum-based ethylene glycol and enhance the self-sufficiency and controllability of the industrial chain.

Regional Economy: Leveraging Xinjiang's advantage as a core area of the Silk Road Economic Belt, it aims to build a vertical integration cluster of "coal — ethylene glycol — polyester new materials," becoming a strategic pivot radiating to Northwest China and facing Central Asia.

Industry Impact: With a capacity surpassing the 1.8 million tons project of Shaanxi Coal Group Yulin Chemical, this project firmly holds the top position in global coal-to-ethylene glycol production capacity, driving the coal chemical industry towards higher-end, more intelligent, and greener transformation.

Turpan City will establish a dedicated task force to provide comprehensive service and support throughout the project, striving for policy and financial backing to ensure smooth construction. With the project's implementation, Turpan's coal resources will achieve tiered value addition from "fuel" to "raw material" and then to "high-end new materials," injecting strong momentum into the construction of Xinjiang's modern industrial system.

He Fei, Vice President of Hengyi Group, stated that the Turpan base will become the core of the company's vertical integration industrial cluster of "coal — ethylene glycol — polyester new materials," helping China's coal chemical industry occupy a commanding height in global competition.
