en.Wedoany.com Report on Mar 21st, Sasol's newly established stone removal plant in Mpumalanga, South Africa, is now operational. The facility aims to optimize coal quality to support synthetic fuel production at the Secunda plant. By removing high-density rocks from raw coal sourced from the Twistdraai and Bosjesspruit mines, the plant improves coal cleanliness, contributing to enhanced efficiency in the subsequent gasification process.
The stone removal plant reached operational status in December 2025 and was converted from the existing Twistdraai export plant. Sasol stated that this conversion project focuses on stone removal operations. By reducing ash and debris before coal enters the gasification stage, it improves the quality of syngas, thereby strengthening the company's competitiveness in the synthetic fuel and chemical value chain.
According to Sasol's data, in the first quarter of the 2026 fiscal year, the average debris level has been reduced to below 14%. This significantly increases the availability of high-quality coal for the Secunda plant and supports the enhancement of overall production capacity. The company emphasized that this improvement plays a crucial role in boosting operational reliability.
Sasol noted that this project is part of its long-term strategy aimed at creating sustainable value by optimizing mining and processing operations. The operation of the stone removal plant not only improves coal quality but also lays the foundation for a stable supply for synthetic fuel production, helping the company maintain a competitive advantage in the global energy market.
