en.Wedoany.com Report, On March 20, 2026, the groundbreaking ceremony for Phase I of the world's largest single-unit 2.4 million tons per year coal-to-ethylene glycol project was grandly held in Turpan, Xinjiang. This project is part of the first phase of the Trillion-Yuan Coal Chemical and New Textile Materials Integration Project undertaken by China's Zhejiang Hengyi Group Co., Ltd. in Turpan, Xinjiang.

Phase I of the Hengyi Xinjiang coal-to-ethylene glycol project has a capacity of 600,000 tons of ethylene glycol. The project uses hydrogen and carbon monoxide as raw materials to produce ethylene glycol. The gasification process employs the Hangtian Maiwei furnace, and the ethylene glycol production utilizes Pujing Chemical Technology.

According to the Altay News Network, the total investment for the first phase is 257 billion yuan, with a construction period of approximately 30 months. It is expected to be completed and operational by the end of 2028. The project will produce high-value-added by-products such as DMC and coal-based ethanol. It will also be equipped with low-carbon technologies including CCS carbon capture and storage, green power coupling, and circular economy initiatives. This will facilitate the transformation of coal from a traditional fuel into high-end chemical raw materials and subsequently into new chemical fiber materials.
