Vi targets 133-city 5G footprint by May with major expansion push

According to the plan, Vi will add 90 new 5G coverage locations within the next two months, expanding its 5G network from the current 43 cities to 133. This move is part of the operator's network densification strategy, focusing on high-demand areas and markets with continuously increasing 5G device adoption.

This 5G deployment will cover 15 telecom circles, including key regions such as Mumbai, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh (East and West), Kolkata, and West Bengal.

Vi stated that it will prioritize deploying 5G networks in industrial corridors, high data consumption centers, and emerging urban clusters. Cities like Chennai, Hyderabad, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Durgapur, and Gandhinagar will receive 5G services in the next phase.

In terms of regional layout, Vi plans to strengthen its network presence in Northern, Eastern, Western, Southern, and Central India. This specifically includes Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh; West Bengal and Sikkim; Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Rajasthan; Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana; as well as Madhya Pradesh.

To enhance network performance and operational efficiency, Vi is deploying AI-driven Self-Optimizing Network (SON) technology and collaborating with suppliers like Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung. This expansion reflects its data-driven deployment strategy, aiming to align network investments with device adoption and usage patterns.

Vi's Chief Technology Officer, Jagbir Singh, commented on this: "As we celebrate one year of Vi's 5G journey, our focus remains on executing a phased and calibrated rollout, aligned with network readiness and evolving customer needs. This expansion to 90 additional cities is consistent with our strategy of prioritizing 5G deployment in key markets with high 5G device penetration."

"Through this phase of deployment, we are significantly enhancing the 5G network in major cities and deepening our coverage in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. We are committed to building a robust, future-ready network that delivers an enhanced customer experience, enabling citizens to thrive in an increasingly digital environment," Singh added.
