China Railway Engineering Equipment's 4m-Class Hard Rock Tunnel Boring Machine Completes Main Tunnel Excavation for Austrian Water Diversion Tunnel

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On April 21, the 4m-class hard rock tunnel boring machine "China Railway Group 1071", developed and manufactured by China Railway Engineering Equipment (a subsidiary of China Railway Group), completed the main tunnel excavation task for the Austrian water diversion tunnel project, achieving a breakthrough.

The water diversion tunnel project has an average altitude of 2,020 meters, consisting of one main tunnel and three branch tunnels, with the main tunnel having a total length of approximately 25.6 kilometers. The construction faced challenges such as complex geological conditions, long-distance hard rock tunneling, crossing multiple fault and fracture zones, as well as ventilation issues in long-distance, small-section tunnels.

China Railway Engineering Equipment customized this hard rock tunnel boring machine for the project. The entire machine complies with European CE standards and incorporates multiple innovative design features to enhance its adaptability under conditions of high altitude, hard rock, and complex geology. Since the machine arrived at the project site in November 2021, the technical service team collaborated with the contractor to complete assembly, commissioning, and the full tunnelling process. During the 22.6-kilometre single-head excavation, the hard rock tunnel boring machine achieved a maximum monthly advance rate of 1,067 meters and a maximum daily advance rate of 63 meters. The machine received service support from the Herrenknecht AG subsidiary in Austria, based in Schwanau, Germany.
