Wedoany.com Report-Jan 3, Growth in demand and various efficiency measures contributed to this outcome in both commercial and public service activities.

Renfe Viajeros, the passenger transport and tourism subsidiary of a Spanish operator, has reported a gross operating profit (EBITDA) of 338 million euros at the close of 2024, representing a 17% increase compared with the 289 million euros recorded in 2023.

Commercial operations, which include AVE, Avlo, Alvia, Euromed, and Intercity, saw an 88% rise in operating profit, moving from 60.78 million euros in 2023 to 114.56 million euros. High-speed connections linking Madrid with Catalonia, Andalusia, and the Valencian Community played a major part in this trend, though the service in the latter region was interrupted by DANA-related disruptions between 29 October and 14 November.

Meanwhile, public services (Cercanías, Rodalies, and Media Distancia), qualified as Public Service Obligations, registered an EBITDA of 224.4 million euros in 2024, reflecting a 1.7% drop compared with the 228.31 million euros achieved in 2023. Extended discounts for these routes have been cited as a key factor in this shift. Overall, the subsidiary’s net losses narrowed by 33.6%, from -65 million euros in 2023 to -43.16 million euros in 2024. Within commercial services alone, the result improved by 35.2%, with losses falling from -70.12 million to -45.42 million. In public services, net profit decreased from 3.72 million to 2.26 million.

A plan focusing on value generation and efficiency improvement has contributed 27.8 million euros to the group’s EBITDA, accompanied by cost savings nearing 60 million euros. The plan includes 46 commercial initiatives and remains in place to adapt to shifting market conditions, targeting efficiency and competitiveness while keeping service quality intact.
