en.Wedoany.com Reported - ABS, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) have completed a joint development project, securing Approval in Principle (AIP) for a 16,000 TEU-class battery-hybrid ultra-large vessel. The AIP is based on ABS's review of the electrical analysis and electrical design of the proposed vessel, confirming compliance with classification society requirements.

Joshua Divin, Senior Vice President of ABS Maritime Business Development, stated that the AIP marks another significant advancement with KSOE and HHI in the field of hybrid electric systems for large commercial vessels. Guided by safety, ABS provides technical capabilities and industry guidance to address technical implementation challenges, contributing to a safer and more efficient maritime industry.

Byung-Hun Kwon, Executive Vice President and Head of the Electrification Center at HD KSOE, noted that this achievement reflects continued progress toward the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) 2050 carbon neutrality target. The company remains committed to enhancing confidence among global shipping companies and classification societies by advancing green and efficient vessel technologies, including integrated battery solutions across the group.

In 2025, KSOE and HD HHI had already secured ABS AIP for Phase 1 of this project, which focused on the electric propulsion system.
