en.Wedoany.com Reported - On June 12, following an order from Zhang Kaiyong, Chairman of Shaanxi Yanchang Petroleum Group, the company's million-ton enhanced oil recovery and supporting project for its ten-million-ton mature oilfield, along with the million-ton full-process integrated CO2 capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology project for low-permeability tight oil reservoirs, officially commenced construction in the Jingbian Industrial Park, Yulin. This is the first full-process CCUS demonstration project on the Loess Plateau of Shaanxi, Gansu, and Ningxia, integrating CO2 capture, pipeline transportation, oil displacement, and storage. Its 146-kilometer CO2 pipeline ranks first in length in western China.

Wang Xiangzeng, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chief Scientist, and Chief Geologist of Yanchang Petroleum Group, introduced that the project has a total investment of 1.64 billion yuan. It will capture and purify high-concentration CO2 from the tail gas of the low-temperature methanol washing unit at Yanchang Yulin Energy and Chemical Company in the Jingbian Industrial Park. The CO2 will then be transported via pipeline in a supercritical state to three oilfield blocks—Tianciwan and Yangmijian in Jingbian, Yulin, and Huaziping in Ansai, Yan'an—for oil displacement and storage. Upon completion, it will become the first million-ton full-process integrated CCUS project independently constructed by a single energy company in the Ordos Basin, providing a replicable and scalable "Yanchang Solution" for the low-carbon utilization of fossil fuels.

In the carbon capture phase, the project will build a new 900,000-ton/year CO2 purification and booster station at Yulin Energy and Chemical Company, using pressurization and dehydration processes for low energy consumption and high capture efficiency, with an estimated capture cost of around 100 yuan per ton of CO2. For carbon transportation, a 146-kilometer CO2 pipeline will be constructed, including a 111-kilometer main line, along with one initial station (hub station), one distribution station, and one terminal station, with a CO2 transportation capacity of 2.8 million tons/year (including reserves for subsequent projects). In the carbon utilization phase, CO2 will be injected into the Huaziping oil area of Xingzichuan Oil Production Plant and the Tianciwan and Yangmijian oil areas of Jingbian Oil Production Plant to enhance oil recovery in low-permeability tight reservoirs. The capture project is expected to achieve mechanical completion by the end of 2026, while the pipeline and injection projects are scheduled for completion by the end of June 2027. The project plans to cumulatively inject and store tens of millions of tons of CO2 over 20 years, with an expected increase in oil production of 1.1728 million tons and a reduction in water usage for oil displacement of 1.2 million tons, significantly contributing to environmental protection and high-quality economic development in the semi-arid, water-scarce region of northern Shaanxi.

The million-ton full-process integrated CCUS project is being constructed by the Pipeline Transportation Company of Yanchang Petroleum Group. Lei Xiaocheng, the company's Party Secretary and Executive Director, stated that they will ensure safety throughout the entire process, improve quality comprehensively, accelerate progress with full effort, and control costs in every detail. They will strictly implement project construction safety responsibilities, leverage technology to empower project safety management, adopt reliable new processes and technologies to create high-quality and premium projects, and scientifically optimize construction plans and schedules to ensure the project is completed on time and put into operation smoothly.

Yanchang Petroleum has four coal chemical industrial parks and 12 low-permeability tight oilfields in northern Shaanxi, where oil, gas, and coal resources coexist, providing unique advantages for CCUS technology research and engineering practice. Since 2007, leveraging its complete industrial chain, high source-sink matching, low capture costs, favorable storage conditions, and significant storage potential, Yanchang Petroleum has continuously advanced its efforts. It has undertaken and participated in 14 national major CCUS science and technology projects and international cooperation projects, developing a full-process integrated technology system for CO2 capture, oil displacement, fracturing, storage, and safety monitoring. It has innovatively formed two theoretical understandings and four core technological achievements, which have been widely recognized by the international community, laying a solid foundation for the large-scale application of CCUS technology.

Over the past 20 years, Yanchang Petroleum has fully promoted CCUS engineering practices. Through national science and technology support projects during the "11th Five-Year Plan" and "12th Five-Year Plan" periods, it built the Yulin Coal Chemical CO2 capture project and the Jingbian Qiaojiawa-Wuqi Yougou CCUS pilot test area. Relying on the national key R&D program during the "13th Five-Year Plan," it established the Wuqi Baibao and Ansai Hua 38 well CO2 oil displacement and storage demonstration projects. During the "14th Five-Year Plan," it continued to expand the scale of technology application, completing the Ansai Huaziping 260,000-ton/year CO2 oil displacement and storage project. Currently, it has the capacity to capture 300,000 tons of CO2 per year and inject 410,000 tons per year for oil displacement and storage, with a cumulative storage of over 500,000 tons of CO2. The daily oil production per single well in the oilfield has increased by 50%, and the recovery rate has improved by more than 8 percentage points compared to water flooding, accumulating rich industrial demonstration experience.

It is reported that to implement the national "dual carbon" strategy, Yanchang Petroleum, following the principles of overall planning, prioritizing efficiency, and phased implementation, has completed the overall plan for a 5 million-ton/year CCUS project and has begun to lay out a ten-million-ton CCUS industrial cluster. This will further reduce carbon emissions from coal chemical enterprises and achieve the goal of stable and increased production of over ten million tons from mature oilfields for 30 consecutive years.
