en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Pediment Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project, developed and commissioned by Aypa Power, has officially entered service in the Elliot Road Technology Corridor in Mesa, Arizona, providing energy storage services to Salt River Project (SRP). The project has a capacity of 250 megawatts (MW)/1,000 megawatt-hours (MWh), capable of powering up to 56,250 households for four hours.

The commissioning of this project comes as the Phoenix metropolitan area remains one of the fastest-growing regions in the United States. SRP is preparing for load growth driven by population increases and expanding commercial demand, with system capacity expected to more than double over the next decade. Battery energy storage will play a central role in meeting peak demand and maintaining system reliability.
"Adding battery energy storage resources provides SRP with the flexibility and capacity to reliably serve our customers," said Bobby Olsen, SRP Vice President and Chief Power System Executive. "As the Valley continues to experience record growth, this project is a significant addition to SRP's energy portfolio and supports SRP's commitment to providing reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity."
The Pediment project, acquired by Aypa Power from Eolian in 2024, is the first of two projects contracted with SRP. In addition to Pediment, Aypa Power is also developing another 250 MW / 2,000 MWh lithium-ion battery energy storage system contracted with SRP, expected to be commissioned in December 2028. Overall, Aypa Power's projects on the SRP system represent 500 MW and 3,000 MWh of energy storage capacity.
"The Pediment project reflects Aypa's disciplined approach to delivering reliable power infrastructure in high-growth markets," said Moe Hajabed, CEO of Aypa Power. "Located in one of the nation's leading data center corridors, this project is well-positioned to support the growing needs of large-load customers while enhancing overall grid reliability."
The project created over 200 construction jobs and is expected to generate more than $16 million in direct economic impact, including $14 million in property tax revenue to Maricopa County over the first 20 years of operation.
SRP maintains a diverse energy portfolio including nuclear, hydro, natural gas, coal, battery storage, and renewable sources such as solar, wind, biomass, and geothermal. As the largest electricity provider in the Greater Phoenix area, the company serves approximately 1.2 million customers and has over 3,000 MW of carbon-free resources, including more than 1,560 MW of solar and over 1,570 MW of battery storage. As part of its commitment to reduce carbon intensity by 82% from 2005 levels by 2035 and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, SRP continues to develop and deploy energy storage technologies. Aypa Power, a Blackstone portfolio company, develops, owns, and operates utility-scale energy storage and hybrid renewable energy projects in North America, with 42 projects currently in operation or under construction and a development pipeline exceeding 22 gigawatts (GW).
