en.Wedoany.com Reported - Exports from Rwanda's Nyakabingo tungsten mine, operated by Trinity Metals, now account for 20% of US primary tungsten concentrate consumption.
Since a commercial agreement was signed in August 2025 between Global Tungsten & Powders (GTP) and Traxys, Trinity's offtake partner, over 320 tonnes of high-grade tungsten concentrate from the Nyakabingo mine have been shipped to GTP's plant in Towanda, Pennsylvania. The concentrate is processed into tungsten powder to supply US industrial and defense sectors.
The company said that shipments to GTP have doubled since last month, raising Trinity Metals' output to 20% of the US average monthly consumption of primary tungsten concentrate.
"Demand for tungsten in the US is growing rapidly, spanning defense and industrial applications. As demand grows, so does the need for imports of primary tungsten concentrate, while domestic US production remains zero. China controls over 80% of global tungsten unit supply and imposes restrictions on dual-use tungsten exports, making Trinity Metals' supply from Rwanda increasingly important to the national security of the US and its allies," said Shawn McCormick, Chairman of Trinity Metals.
He further stated that as Rwanda's largest mineral producer and exporter, Trinity Metals is proud to support Rwanda's role in meeting US strategic needs. Given the growing importance of critical minerals, the company sees a clear opportunity for a strategic partnership agreement between the US and Rwanda in the critical minerals sector, similar to agreements that already exist with other countries on the African continent.
