en.Wedoany.com Reported - Santos' Moomba Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project in Australia has safely and permanently stored 2 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent just over 18 months after commencing operations, marking a significant milestone in the country's decarbonization efforts.

Located in the Cooper Basin in South Australia, the project is the largest onshore CCS project in Australia. Despite two major flood events in the region over the past year, the project has demonstrated its scale, reliability, and technical stability.

The Clean Energy Regulator's 2024–25 Safeguard Mechanism Data Insights Report noted that Moomba CCS has become a key contributor to emissions reduction in Australia's energy production sector. The report stated that the facility's successful implementation of carbon capture and storage helps reduce the emissions intensity of the oil and gas industry.

During the 2024/25 reporting period, Moomba CCS stored approximately 1 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, accounting for about one-third of the total emissions reductions covered by the Safeguard Mechanism.

Santos Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Kevin Gallagher said the race to develop and deploy CCS is underway, and Australia has unique advantages to lead in this field, including geological storage resources, a well-established regulatory system, and regional emission sources adjacent to large CO2 sources. He stated that CCS offers Australia an excellent opportunity to solidify its position as a regional carbon storage powerhouse, unlocking new high-skilled, safe, high-paying jobs and international investment. Santos' acreage in the Cooper/Eromanga Basins alone has the potential to inject up to 20 million tonnes of CO2 annually for 50 consecutive years. The company is ready to collaborate with governments and hard-to-abate industries such as steel and cement to deploy this cost-competitive, proven technology to provide real decarbonization solutions.

In just over 18 months of operation, Moomba CCS has demonstrated large-scale emissions reduction capability and directly contributed to Santos achieving its 2030 Scope 1 and Scope 2 equity emissions reduction target five years early. At the time of storing 2 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, the stored emissions were equivalent to removing 826,000 cars from South Australian roads. Following this achievement, the project's operation further strengthens Santos' goal of establishing and operating a commercial carbon storage business for third-party emissions.

As of September 30, 2025, the Moomba CCS project has earned over 1.19 million Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) for the CO2 equivalent injected.
