China’s COOEC Starts Shell Nigeria’s Gas Project
Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 1, China Offshore Oil Engineering Company (COOEC) began fabricating key components for Shell’s HI shallow-water gas and condensate project offshore Nigeria. Located in Offshore Mining Licence (OML) 144, the development includes a three-level topside module and a four-legged jacket. This infrastructure features a hybrid energy system combining wind and solar power, reflecting a focus on sustainability in oil and gas operations.
COOEC marked the start of this phase with a steel-cutting ceremony at its Tianjin yard this week. The completed facilities are set for delivery by late March 2026. Once operational, the HI project will supply up to 500 million cubic feet of gas daily to Nigeria LNG’s Train 7 expansion, a vital effort to increase Nigeria’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) output and support its export goals.
Nigeria, home to Africa’s largest gas reserves, aims to strengthen its LNG production through initiatives like NLNG Train 7, which targets a 35 percent capacity boost. The Shell-led HI development will provide essential gas volumes for this expansion, enhancing Nigeria’s standing in the global LNG market. COOEC’s role showcases its expertise in offshore engineering and modular construction, meeting Shell’s technical and environmental requirements.
The project’s hybrid energy system, integrating renewable sources like wind and solar with conventional power, aims to lower carbon emissions while ensuring efficient operations. This design aligns with broader industry trends toward cleaner energy practices. Analysts suggest that the project’s success could encourage further partnerships between Chinese engineering firms and international energy companies in offshore gas developments.
With fabrication now in progress, attention turns to meeting the delivery timeline by late March 2026. The HI project’s completion will bolster Nigeria’s gas supply and contribute to global energy security as LNG demand grows. For Shell and its partners, this initiative represents a key investment in Nigeria’s energy landscape, while COOEC’s involvement highlights its growing influence in global engineering projects.
