BMW Invests $1.7 Billion Against the Trend to Upgrade U.S. Plant for Electrification
en.Wedoany.com Reported - While Volkswagen and domestic U.S. automakers are cutting investments in electric vehicles and slowing their expansion pace, the BMW Group is choosing to go against the trend. It is transforming its plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, into a global electric vehicle production hub, supplying not only the U.S. market but also exporting worldwide.
To advance this strategy, BMW has invested approximately $1.7 billion in South Carolina, including modernizing the Spartanburg plant to enable electric vehicle production and building a new power battery assembly plant in Woodruff, not far from the facility. BMW is about to launch the next-generation X5 SUV, which will be produced at the Spartanburg plant. BMW plans that by 2030, at least 50% of its global vehicle deliveries will be fully electric, and the Spartanburg plant will play a central role in this strategy—according to the plan, the plant will produce six full electric models by 2030.
BMW stated: "SUVs are the most important segment in the U.S. market and also hold significant electrification potential. Our global production strategy consistently adheres to the principle of 'produce where the market is.'"
However, the U.S. electric vehicle market is experiencing a notable cooldown. In the first quarter of 2026, the share of fully electric vehicles in the U.S. new car market dropped to 5.6%. In the first quarter of this year, U.S. consumers registered only about 10,000 German brand fully electric vehicles, compared to roughly three times that number two years ago. U.S. President Donald Trump canceled federal purchase subsidies for electric vehicles in October 2025. The three major U.S. automakers—General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis—have collectively recorded approximately $53 billion in impairment losses on their electric vehicle businesses.
