en.Wedoany.com Reported - Dimension News, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) announced on Tuesday that it has ordered 18 Airbus A330-900neo wide-body aircraft from Airbus as part of its plan to acquire up to 40 long-range European aircraft. This order, with a total investment of $10 billion (based on list prices), is the largest single investment since the company's founding.
SAS CEO Anko van der Werff stated: "This is the largest investment in the company's history and a clear signal of our confidence in future development." The newly introduced A330neo aircraft will be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions by approximately 25% compared to previous-generation models.
In addition to the 18 firm orders, the plan includes purchase rights for 10 additional A330neo aircraft, as well as several previous-generation A330-300 aircraft, which will be used to supplement capacity during the transition period before the new aircraft are delivered. SAS stated that this fleet renewal project will significantly improve fuel efficiency, noise performance, and passenger experience, marking the most significant modernization effort in the company's decades-long history.
This order follows SAS's purchase of 55 regional aircraft from Embraer last year. The airline completed its Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring in 2024, during which it reduced debt by over $2 billion. In 2025, SAS achieved an operating profit of 30 billion Swedish kronor (approximately $3.08 billion), compared to a loss of 2.1 billion Swedish kronor in the same period the previous year.
SAS also unveiled expansion plans for its Copenhagen hub, which are expected to create approximately 25,000 new jobs by 2030 and contribute 25 billion Danish kroner (approximately $3.8 billion) to Denmark's GDP.
