Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 10, Charge point provider char.gy, based in London, has landed a £130 million deal to install 6,000 curbside electric vehicle (EV) chargers for Brighton and Hove City Council (BHCC), marking the UK’s largest project of this type. Alongside the installation, char.gy has secured a 15-year contract to manage and maintain the charging network.

The initiative focuses on deploying Level 2 chargers along streets, where most UK drivers park, making overnight charging more accessible and affordable. Char.gy’s pricing includes a night rate of £0.39/kWh from midnight to 7 am, compared to a daytime rate of £0.59/kWh, encouraging cost-effective charging for EV users.

John Lewis, chief executive of char.gy, stated: “This project is a huge moment for the UK and its EV ambitions. This partnership alone will empower thousands of residents to confidently make the switch to electric vehicles, knowing they have easy access to chargers.” The effort aims to support broader adoption of EVs by addressing charging convenience.

Brighton and Hove City Council is utilizing the UK government’s Local EV Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund, which assists local authorities in England to provide charging options for residents without private parking spaces. Lilian Greenwood, Future of Roads Minister, commented: “Making EV charging as accessible as possible is crucial to making the switch to electric a success.” This project aligns with national efforts to expand EV infrastructure.

According to the Department for Transport, the UK currently has over 75,000 public EV chargers in operation. A December report from the National Audit Office indicated that the country’s charger rollout remains on course to meet the Department for Transport’s goal of at least 300,000 chargers by 2030. The Brighton and Hove project contributes significantly to this target.

By installing chargers curbside, char.gy and BHCC aim to meet the needs of urban drivers, enhancing the practicality of EV ownership. The 15-year operation contract ensures long-term reliability and upkeep of the network, supporting sustained growth in EV use across the region. This collaboration reflects a practical step toward cleaner transportation in the UK.
