The funding will strengthen the capabilities of Nepal’s Department of Roads, which has faced challenges due to limited resources and technical expertise, particularly when addressing natural events like floods, landslides, and earthquakes. The program will enable the department to adopt advanced materials and construction methods, establish robust inspection and maintenance systems, and integrate disaster risk-reduction measures into bridge planning and design.

David Sislen, the World Bank’s division country director for the Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, stated: “The resilience of Nepal’s bridge network is fundamental for safe and sustained connectivity. This program emphasises resilient infrastructure development and promoting access to markets and services for vulnerable communities while promoting Nepal’s sustainable growth.” The initiative reflects a commitment to supporting Nepal’s long-term development goals.

By upgrading bridge infrastructure, the program will improve access to markets, services, and opportunities, particularly for remote and vulnerable communities. Enhanced bridges will facilitate smoother transportation, supporting local economies and fostering sustainable growth. The use of modern techniques and materials will also ensure that new and refurbished bridges are better equipped to withstand environmental challenges.

The World Bank’s support underscores the importance of resilient infrastructure in Nepal, where reliable transportation networks are vital for connecting communities and driving economic activity. The program will prioritize sustainability, focusing on construction practices that balance durability with environmental considerations. This approach aims to create lasting benefits for Nepal’s residents and businesses.

Nepal’s Department of Roads will lead the implementation, working to strengthen its technical and organizational capacity. The funding will enable training programs, equipment upgrades, and the adoption of best practices in bridge management. These improvements are expected to enhance the department’s ability to maintain and expand Nepal’s bridge network effectively.

This financing package marks a significant step in Nepal’s efforts to modernize its infrastructure. The Third Bridges Improvement and Maintenance Program will contribute to safer travel, better connectivity, and increased economic opportunities across the country.
