en.Wedoany.com Reported - ANDRITZ has recently been awarded a contract to modernize the 2G4 generating unit at the Jebba Hydropower Plant in Nigeria. The contract was granted by Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited (MESL), marking the third unit upgrade order for ANDRITZ at Jebba, following the completion of upgrades for units 2G6 and 2G5.

Valued in the tens of millions of euros, the contract will be booked in ANDRITZ's second quarter of 2026 order intake. Under the agreement, ANDRITZ will supply electrical and hydro-mechanical equipment for the 2G4 unit, including a new turbine with a hydraulic propeller design, a generator, auxiliary equipment, and intake gates. The upgrade aims to enhance unit efficiency, power output, and operational flexibility, thereby increasing the plant's renewable electricity supply.
The new turbine, jointly developed by ANDRITZ and MESL, can operate under deep partial load conditions and offers higher efficiency and power output. This allows the operator to optimize generation performance in support of Nigeria's energy transition goals.
"When we took over the Jebba Hydropower Plant in 2013, it was in urgent need of large-scale modernization. With ANDRITZ's assistance, we not only completed the restoration but also optimized it," said Engr. Lamu Audu, Managing Director and CEO of MESL. "This enables us to provide reliable renewable electricity to an increasing number of Nigerians."
The Jebba Hydropower Plant was commissioned in 1985 and is equipped with six turbines, each with a capacity of 96.4 MW, for a total installed capacity of 578.4 MW. Under a concession agreement with the Federal Government of Nigeria, MESL operates four major hydropower facilities in the country, with a total installed capacity of 2,078 MW, accounting for over 25% of the nation's electricity supply.
"Securing the third project mandate at Jebba reflects the successful execution of previous upgrades and MESL's trust in our technical capabilities and project team," said Anton Schindele, Vice President of Service & Retrofit at ANDRITZ Austria. "Hydropower plays a central role in providing reliable renewable electricity, and we are pleased to continue supporting MESL in strengthening Nigeria's power infrastructure."
