Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 15, Cumberland Council’s planning committee in the UK has greenlit a redevelopment plan for Carlisle Station, introducing public space enhancements and a new pedestrian area called George Square. This forms part of the broader Carlisle Southern Gateway project, aimed at improving the station’s accessibility and appeal.

The project’s first phase will introduce landscaping and surface car parking on the former Pools and Staples sites.

The initial phase will create George Square, a pedestrian-friendly zone with a crossing over Water Street, connecting the station to the Turkish Baths and James Street. It will also feature landscaping and surface parking on the former Pools and Staples sites. The second phase will remove the remaining Station Retail Park to expand parking facilities.

The project’s design reflects Carlisle’s historical character, using materials like brick, sandstone, and stone setts. Textured paving and modular concrete furniture will enhance the public space, while the car park will incorporate ornamental and native plants to support biodiversity. A council representative noted: “The Carlisle Station Gateway project will improve the station’s accessibility and atmosphere for visitors and locals.”

With a £27 million ($35.25 million) budget, the initiative is backed by £20 million from the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal. Construction is set to begin in late 2025, following upgrades to nearby roads. The project complements another approved development at Court Square on the station’s northern side, finalized in February 2025, which includes public space improvements, pedestrianization, and the relocation of Lawson’s Monument.

In a related effort, Cumberland Council recently selected Krol Corlett Construction as the lead contractor for the Carlisle Library transformation, part of a £19.7 million Town Deal Investment Plan. This plan also supports the Carlisle Southern Gateway and enhancements at Tullie House, contributing to the city’s overall development.

The Carlisle Station Gateway project aims to create a welcoming environment for residents and visitors while preserving the area’s heritage. By integrating thoughtful design and sustainable elements, it seeks to enhance connectivity and foster a vibrant community space for years to come.
