en.Wedoany.com Reported - On July 4, Unit 2 of the CGN Guangdong Taipingling Nuclear Power Plant, the first "Hualong One" nuclear power project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, successfully achieved its first grid connection and generated its first kilowatt-hour of electricity. This grid connection marks that the unit is now capable of transmitting power to the grid, entering a critical verification phase before commercial operation.
Located in Guangdong, the Taipingling Nuclear Power Project is one of the key clean energy projects in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Unit 2 adopts China's independent third-generation nuclear power technology, "Hualong One." The first grid connection signifies that after completing preliminary construction, installation, commissioning, and grid connection preparations, the unit has entered the live operation verification phase. Grid connection of a nuclear power unit does not equate to formal commercial operation; subsequent steps include planned operational tests at various power levels to continuously verify the performance of the reactor, turbine generator set, electrical systems, control systems, safety systems, and auxiliary equipment. Only after completing relevant tests and acceptance procedures can the unit enter the formal power generation phase.
"Hualong One" is an important technological pathway for China's nuclear power self-reliance and has been implemented in batch construction across multiple projects. Following the grid connection of Taipingling Unit 2, performance verification of the unit will continue, with formal commercial power generation expected in the second half of 2026.
The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has high electricity demand and dense industrial activity, requiring a long-term stable and low-carbon power supply. Nuclear power, with its continuous and stable generation capability, can provide baseload power support for regional industrial production, urban operations, data centers, advanced manufacturing, and residential electricity needs. The advancement of the Taipingling Nuclear Power Project will also drive the industrial chain, including nuclear island equipment, conventional island equipment, turbine generators, electrical control systems, nuclear-grade valves, pump equipment, instrumentation and control, engineering installation, and operation and maintenance services. As Unit 2 enters the grid connection verification phase, the project focus will shift to operational tests, performance confirmation, safety management, and commissioning preparations.
Currently, Unit 2 of the Taipingling Nuclear Power Plant has completed its first grid connection and is officially capable of transmitting power to the grid. Subsequent work will center on unit performance verification and pre-commercial operation tests, with the goal of achieving formal commercial power generation in the second half of 2026.
