Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 16, Bosch GmbH (Gerlingen, Germany) and Element Six (Oxford, U.K.) have partnered to form Bosch Quantum Sensing, a joint venture based in Ludwigsburg, Germany. Building on Bosch’s 2022 start-up of the same name, the venture employs 30 associates. Bosch will lead operations, holding the majority stake, while Element Six owns 25%. Financial details remain undisclosed, and the venture awaits official approval.

Bosch and Element Six’s quantum sensors partnership will extend innovation leadership

The joint venture focuses on developing quantum sensors for applications in resource exploration, aircraft navigation, and medical technology. Bosch projects the global market for medical and mobility applications to reach several billion euros annually by the mid-2030s. Synthetic diamonds, a specialty of Element Six, are critical to these sensors, enabling precise detection of minute magnetic fields. This collaboration aims to advance the commercialization of quantum sensors.

Element Six also applies its synthetic diamond expertise to innovative water-treatment systems, including a pilot plant for PFAS treatment developed with Lummus, which recently began operations.

“Quantum sensors are a future technology with huge potential. They will bring about fundamental changes in many sectors of our economy, and improve people’s lives,” said Stefan Hartung, chairman of the board of management of Robert Bosch GmbH. “As innovation leader of commercial quantum sensors, we will work with Element Six to further extend our technological lead.”

“We want to work with Element Six to make quantum sensors economical and allow them to be produced on an industrial scale,” said Katrin Kobe, CEO of Bosch Quantum Sensing. “In this way, we will create the basis for innovative applications that set new standards for precision and efficiency.”

“Through the new joint venture between Bosch and Element Six, which aligns with Element Six’ contribution towards De Beers Group’s Origins strategy, we will integrate our synthetic diamond technology with Bosch Quantum Sensing’s capabilities, unlocking new possibilities in critical sectors such as healthcare and navigation,” said Siobhán Duffy, CEO of Element Six.

Element Six provides high-quality synthetic diamonds tailored for industrial use, while Bosch integrates them into scalable sensor systems. The latest Bosch quantum sensor prototype, comparable in size to a smartphone, offers high sensitivity for applications like robust navigation systems complementing GPS, resource exploration, and cardiac activity monitoring in medical settings. Compact sensors promise portability, cost-effective production, and scalability. Bosch Quantum Sensing aims to miniaturize these sensors for chip-level integration, enhancing their potential across industries.
