en.Wedoany.com Reported - Red Eléctrica has launched a key phase of the Espinardo 220 kV new substation and double-circuit underground transmission line project, spanning 11.2 km to connect the Murcia and El Palmar substations, aiming to accelerate construction of the northern section and reduce impact on urban traffic in July and August.

As a subsidiary of Redeia, Red Eléctrica is responsible for the transmission and operation of Spain's electricity system. The company has concentrated construction during the summer, when the population density of the Murcia capital decreases and coincides with the semester break at the University of Murcia campus in the Espinardo area, thereby minimizing disruption to regional daily activities.

The action plan, coordinated with the Murcia City Council (Ayuntamiento de Murcia), has imposed traffic restrictions around Espinardo and on Avenida de Juan Carlos I since the 26th.

The summer construction phase includes trench excavation through two simultaneous work fronts to enhance flexibility, advancing work in particularly sensitive urban sections of the line while ensuring coordination with traffic and public road use. During this period, the first scheduled pipeline will be laid to overcome geographical obstacles and critical infrastructure such as the Segura River channel and tram tracks, ensuring a continuous power line without altering the surface.

Red Eléctrica stated that concentrating construction in summer helps limit traffic impact to the coming months, and it will continue to coordinate intervention measures with the city council to ensure road infrastructure is restored after project completion.

The project is part of the current electricity plan approved by the Council of Ministers and is binding for Red Eléctrica. The estimated investment is €55.3 million, aimed at strengthening power supply from the transmission grid to the distribution network. Through this infrastructure, the company expects to enhance the power system's capacity, facilitating the development of new industrial, commercial, and residential projects in Murcia. This action is seen as a reinforcement of the urban grid amid growing demand and increased need for supply security.

The line will be fully underground, running along Avenida de Juan Carlos I, Avenida Reino de Murcia, Avenida Miguel Induráin, Avenida de los Dolores, and Ronda Sur. The new configuration will form a closed-loop mesh structure, designed to improve the efficiency and resilience of the urban power system.
