en.Wedoany.com Reported - Chile's state-owned copper company Codelco's Ventanas division is piloting a 100% electric truck to transport copper cathodes between its Puchuncaví plant and the Port of San Antonio. The pilot aims to evaluate the intercity logistics performance of a high-tonnage electric truck under real industrial conditions.

The truck, supplied by SANY América Latina, has a nominal range of 500 kilometers. The logistics loop between the plant and the port covers approximately 260 kilometers. Transporte Pascual Pizarro Toro is responsible for driving and cargo supervision.

Ricardo Weishaupt, General Manager of Codelco Ventanas, stated that the truck's range is fully capable of covering the established logistics route of approximately 260 kilometers.

In terms of environmental benefits, according to forecasts from the Services and Logistics department, replacing all 25 trucks currently used for cathode transport with electric vehicles would reduce annual diesel consumption by 725,000 liters. This reduction is equivalent to taking 420 cars off the road or the annual carbon capture of over 88,000 trees. The project aligns with Codelco's corporate goals for decarbonization and logistics efficiency at its domestic work centers.

The core purpose of the pilot is to gain operational certainty regarding battery performance under real route terrain conditions and the economic variables required for scaled implementation before committing to large-scale investment. Weishaupt stated that continuously evaluating such alternatives helps integrate environmental sustainability with efficiency and competitiveness, thereby supporting the company's production and environmental commitments, including its 2030 decarbonization target.
