en.Wedoany.com Reported - The renovation project of the Chiu-Chiu community heritage square, funded by Codelco through a competitive fund, held its completion ceremony on July 6, 2026, in Calama. The fund is linked to the Environmental Qualification Resolution (RCA) commitments of the RT Sulfuros project, and the ceremony was attended by residents and local authority representatives.

The project includes the upgrade of the square's traditional cobblestone pavement and the installation of a technical irrigation system, aimed at strengthening this iconic space in the Alto Loa village. The work was guided by technical professionals to ensure construction quality and sustainability, and local labor was employed for sidewalk construction and other construction phases.
This competitive fund project enables the community to self-manage initiatives aimed at restoring and enhancing ancestral values, culture, and heritage, contributing to development and the preservation of local identity. Héctor Cortés, Senior Community Development Advisor at Codelco, stated that these funds are designed to allow communities to autonomously manage projects involving the restoration of ancestral values, culture, and heritage, and that the square itself is the best heritage, which people are improving and strengthening.
Erika Pérez, Treasurer of the Chiu-Chiu Neighborhood Committee, expressed appreciation for the support received, noting that the village always has needs and thanking Codelco for its support in these environments useful to the village. Pedro Chambe Mamani, a Chiu-Chiu resident and project worker, emphasized the importance of preserving traditional construction techniques and thanked Codelco and the advisors for their support, enabling them to continue building for the future.
This public space renovation represents a new step in enhancing local heritage value and reaffirms the commitment of the community and Codelco to the sustainable development of the Alto Loa village, where strategic mining operations in Chile are located.
