en.Wedoany.com Reported - Sheffield Forgemasters has held a topping-out ceremony for the final steel roof beam of its new 30,000-square-meter machining workshop, marking a key milestone in the project's construction.
Representatives from the company and development contractor McLaughlin & Harvey celebrated the event at the workshop site, where the framework is now nearing completion. Guests signed the final roof beam before it was secured with a golden bolt tightened by Paul Haxton, a machinist with nearly 50 years of service at the company, and first-year apprentice Joe Garrett.

Gareth Barker, the company's Chief Operating Officer, stated that this event represents a significant milestone in the construction of the machining workshop. The new facility will combine decades of expertise with state-of-the-art equipment, enabling high-precision machining and enhancing innovation capabilities, making the company more competitive in the global market. Attendees included several long-serving employees and first-year apprentices; for many machinists, this was their first visit to their future workplace.
The workshop is being built in parallel with a new 13,000-ton forging line, both part of a £1.3 billion recapitalization program driven by its owner, the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD). Barker added that there are less than two years until the facility becomes operational, offering a cleaner, faster, and higher-quality working environment.
The machining workshop is scheduled to begin operations by the end of 2028 and has already become a landmark in the area. Paul Griffen, Managing Director of McLaughlin & Harvey, noted that the completion of the steel structure work reflects collaboration and commitment from all parties, and the team looks forward to continuing cooperation until project delivery.
The project team includes Arup, responsible for ecological and traffic assessments; Bond Bryan Architects; JLL, which assisted with site acquisition and planning submissions; and delivery support partner Turner & Townsend.
