en.Wedoany.com Reported - Baltic Container Terminal Gdynia (BCT) in Poland has taken delivery of two Liebherr LHM 550 mobile harbor cranes to support berth expansion at the Port of Gdynia, accommodating larger vessels and higher container throughput.

The cranes were delivered through a tender co-funded by the European Union, with the delivery deadline set for June 2026. Liebherr stated that all delivery milestones were completed as planned. The equipment is dedicated to container handling operations and has joined the terminal's existing fleet of two LHM 400 cranes. BCT emphasized that the core purpose of the new equipment is to prepare the berths for next-stage demands, reducing the risk of delays at the quayside.

The LHM 550 crane has a maximum working radius of 54 meters and is equipped with Liebherr's Pactronic system, enhancing energy efficiency during high-intensity handling cycles. These cranes are prepped for future integration of electric drives, providing a pathway for further terminal modernization. The project also includes custom-sized support pads tailored to the berth structure. The cranes underwent an 8-hour endurance test under continuous operating conditions before delivery.

BCT has been handling container operations since 1979 and became part of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) in 2003. The terminal currently has an annual capacity of approximately 1 million TEUs, handling 558,331 TEUs in 2025, with rail transport accounting for about 20%. Recent quayside works have enabled the terminal to accommodate vessels up to 400 meters in length. Future developments are expected to support berth handling capacity of 1.2 million to 1.6 million TEUs, depending on the final crane configuration.

"The new cranes provide additional flexibility at the interface between vessel, terminal, and hinterland," said Wojciech Szymulewicz, CEO of BCT Gdynia. "They support growth plans, align with operational models, and enhance our ability to serve customers as we enter the next phase of development."

The new LHM 550 cranes match BCT's existing Liebherr fleet, facilitating operator familiarity, maintenance planning, and lifecycle management. The contract scope also includes extended warranties for key components, metal structures, and the painting system. Andreas Müller, Managing Director of Liebherr-Rostock GmbH, stated that the cooperation with BCT is based on long-term technical dialogue and shared execution standards. "Completing the project on schedule and to specification is a significant achievement in itself," Müller said.
