en.Wedoany.com Reported - Tetra Pak has launched its first industrial-scale bioreactor, the Tetra Pak® Bioreactor RF. This product was introduced following Tetra Pak's acquisition of Bioreactors.net in December 2025, marking a significant step in expanding the company's industrial fermentation and new food production solutions.

New food fermentation involves using microorganisms such as yeast, bacteria, and fungi to convert raw materials into high-value food ingredients. Mastering this capability is becoming increasingly important for food and food ingredient producers. As the industry seeks more diverse raw material sources and higher resource efficiency, producers are rapidly scaling up from pilot testing to commercial production. Therefore, companies need a system with stable performance to reduce variability and ease operational burdens.
The Tetra Pak® Bioreactor RF is a fermentation vessel designed to maintain stable process conditions and provide operators with actionable process insights. From pilot-scale validation to initial industrial runs and full-scale production, the system delivers repeatable, stable performance without increasing operational complexity.
Rafael Barros, Director of New Food at Tetra Pak, stated that the key to successful industrial fermentation lies in consistent, stable daily performance. The Tetra Pak® Bioreactor RF is designed to help producers reduce operational risks and complexity, allowing operators to maintain control over the process at all times.
The bioreactor is pre-assembled and factory-tested, accelerating on-site installation and commissioning while minimizing disruption to production schedules. Its integrated platform design eliminates the need for additional support structures, reducing installation costs and complexity. Compared to traditional industrial-scale bioreactors, these features can lower capital investment by up to 8%.

At the core of the Tetra Pak® Bioreactor RF is a patented magnetic mixing system that eliminates the need for mechanical seals, thereby reducing contamination risks and process fluctuations common in traditional designs. Unlike conventional magnetic mixers that may struggle to maintain power as vessel size increases, this system is designed to ensure consistent power and oxygen delivery across different scales. This helps maintain stable process conditions and reduces the risk of batch loss, which can cost approximately €1,000 per cubic meter.
High levels of automation further simplify operations. Self-regulating control functions help stabilize process conditions during process changes, reducing the need for manual intervention. Combined with predefined operating strategies and integrated data monitoring, operators can manage the process more efficiently and gain clearer visibility into operational status.
With the combined benefits of simplified operations, reduced contamination risks, and enhanced process stability, the Tetra Pak® Bioreactor RF can help producers achieve operating cost savings of up to 12%.
The Tetra Pak® Bioreactor RF is available in sizes ranging from 10 liters to 50,000 liters. All units share the same design platform, control logic, and operating philosophy, simplifying operator training and improving daily operational consistency across different plants and production scales. Its modular configuration also allows producers to adjust alarm thresholds, impellers, and configurations based on changing process needs without adding unnecessary system complexity.
Leveraging Tetra Pak's expertise in food processing and its global service network, the Tetra Pak® Bioreactor RF provides a stable, easy-to-operate foundation platform for producers of fermented food ingredients and new food products.
Specifically, commissioning of the bioreactor typically takes about 6 weeks, saving commissioning costs compared to the traditional 12-week timeline. At an estimated daily cost of €1,500, this can save up to €45,000. Its compact design can reduce platform costs by 60%, equivalent to a saving of €280,000 on a €4 million investment scenario. Combined, these savings total up to €325,000, approximately 8% of total capital expenditure (CAPEX). Batch loss is calculated under two scenarios: one with a titer of 30 g/L, DSP recovery of 65%, and a price of €45/kg; the other with a titer of 100 g/L, DSP recovery of 65%, and a price of €17/kg. For operating cost savings, based on a baseline operating cost of approximately €2.87 million, the solution requires only 5 full-time employees, saving about €219,000 annually compared to the baseline of 8 employees. The magnetic mixer reduces the contamination probability from 5% to 1%, saving approximately €121,000 per year. Total operating cost savings amount to €340,000, or 12%.
