en.Wedoany.com Reported - Energy company Drax has completed the refurbishment of the Tongland power station in Scotland.

Tongland Hydropower Station

Located in Dumfries and Galloway and built in the 1930s, Tongland power station is one of the longest-running hydropower stations in Scotland. The £2 million refurbishment involved restoring the station's exterior with specialist materials to protect this historic building for decades to come.

Due to its significance in the history of hydropower development and its "fine modernist classical design," Tongland power station is listed as a Category A listed building by Historic Environment Scotland. Special measures were therefore taken during construction to protect the station's structure.

In addition to the exterior refurbishment, Drax has also renovated the exhibition space within the main plant, allowing the station to reopen for school group visits.

The station is part of the Galloway Hydro Scheme, a network of dams, reservoirs, and power stations spanning the Dumfries and Galloway region. Comprising six hydropower facilities, it has supplied renewable electricity to Scotland for decades.

Ian Kinnaird, Drax's FlexGen Assets Director, stated that the Galloway Hydro Scheme has been generating flexible, renewable power for 90 years, and this major refurbishment will ensure it continues to do so for many years to come. He also noted that the project was complex due to the need to carefully protect this historic building. Kinnaird added that Tongland has been part of Scotland's energy landscape for nearly a century, and everyone involved in the project should be proud of the station's renewed appearance.

The external refurbishment of Tongland station is part of Drax's broader investment in Scotland. The company is currently advancing several initiatives, including installing approximately 1,500 solar panels at its Galloway and Lanark hydropower projects, completing an £80 million upgrade of Cruachan Power Station, and the upcoming upgrade of Glenlee station.
