Dynon Avionics Develops Integrated IFR Navigation

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Dynon Avionics is developing an integrated IFR GPS navigator for its SkyView HDX avionics system, enabling full IFR navigation including coupled RNAV (LPV) approaches via a remote module mounted behind the panel, eliminating the need for a traditional panel-mounted navigator. Flight planning and navigation management are all performed on the existing SkyView HDX display.

The new solution aims to save valuable radio panel space for aircraft owners while eliminating the high hardware costs and installation complexity of traditional IFR navigators. Dynon stated that it is simultaneously developing a new flight planning interface, using a more graphical workflow to load departure, arrival, and approach procedures, replacing traditional menu structures. The system will support managing both VFR and IFR flight plans within the same interface and will be fully integrated with the Dynon autopilot for coupled instrument approaches.

Steps such as selecting procedures, choosing arrivals, adding approach transitions, loading and activating approaches, and defining holds are all completed within an easy-to-follow menu.

Dynon President Brad Thurow stated that the company's goal is to make avionics accessible, integrated, and intuitive. With the upcoming features, SkyView HDX users will be able to perform IFR tasks, including coupled LPV approaches, without sacrificing radio panel space.

This announcement comes as the aviation industry prepares for the implementation of the FAA's Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification (MOSAIC) rules. Dynon believes that integrated, space-saving IFR avionics are particularly well-suited for future light sport aircraft operating under the new regulations. The new features will also be available to existing SkyView HDX users, providing an upgrade path without requiring a display replacement.

Regarding pricing and release timing, Dynon stated that certification and flight testing are progressing well, and the finished product's price will be a fraction of the cost of a traditional standalone IFR navigator. Many UK builders and owners of LAA-permitted aircraft are already using SkyView HDX, and this feature will also benefit those users.
