Under the agreement, Hapag-Lloyd will utilize the existing shore power infrastructure at the Port of Hamburg whenever operational conditions permit. This commitment covers all terminals within the port area that are equipped with shore power facilities.

The carrier recently successfully connected the container ships "Al Muraykh" and "Tihama" to shore power during their port stays in Hamburg. Both vessels operate on the NE2 service connecting Asia and Northern Europe.

Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd, stated that shore power is a crucial element for achieving low-emission port operations for vessels and moving toward the company's goal of net-zero fleet emissions by 2045. He noted that all newbuilds are already shore power-ready, and the company is retrofitting suitable vessels in its existing fleet. Hapag-Lloyd will use shore power whenever the infrastructure is available and operationally feasible.

Hapag-Lloyd stated that approximately 35% of its current fleet is fully equipped with shore power connection capabilities. These vessels can draw electricity from the local grid while in port, helping to reduce emissions in the port area.
