en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) is preparing to open a new frequency band for local wireless broadband networks.

The agency states that this initiative aims to meet the demand for networks operating within restricted areas in scenarios such as industry, logistics, healthcare, R&D environments, and event production.
The preparation is based on an implementing decision of the European Commission, which establishes harmonized technical conditions for the availability and efficient sharing of the 3800-4200 MHz band. This band is specifically designed for low-power and medium-power terrestrial wireless broadband systems, i.e., private networks, intended for specific organizations or application scenarios such as industrial zones, ports, hospitals, campuses, or event areas.
In Finland, Traficom is responsible for granting frequency usage rights through radio licenses for small local network services operating within a defined area.
Traficom surveyed the need for using the 3800-4200 MHz band in Finland through a public consultation in the spring of 2026. The consultation received 23 responses, which have been used in subsequent work. Additionally, Traficom commissioned FusionLayer Oy to prepare an independent assessment report on the activation of the new band, evaluating the technical and economic conditions of the band from the perspective of local wireless broadband networks, and examining options for dividing the band between local and national use.
Traficom's preparatory work will continue through 2026. The future use of the band will be reflected in the next updates of the Government Decree on the Use of Radio Frequencies and the Frequency Plan 1246/2014, and Traficom's Radio Frequency Regulation M4. In the update, it is proposed to allocate the 4050-4200 MHz band to local wireless broadband networks. The agency is also developing radio license conditions related to the activation of this band.
The goal is to finalize key policies and regulations concerning the band's activation by the end of 2026. It is planned to begin accepting radio license applications for local network use in early 2027, and to start issuing operational licenses in the spring of 2027.
