UK Virtual Power Plant Axle Energy Secures $25 Million Funding
en.Wedoany.com Reported - London-based startup Axle Energy recently raised $25 million in a funding round led by Energize Capital, with plans to further expand its virtual power plant (VPP) network into the UK and international markets. Since its inception, the company has coordinated over 300,000 connected assets on its platform, representing a combined flexible capacity of more than 2 gigawatts (GW), equivalent to the output of a nuclear power station.
Virtual power plants are not new power generation facilities; instead, they use software to connect distributed energy assets—such as electric vehicle chargers, home batteries, and solar panels—into a network, enabling them to operate collaboratively as a flexible power plant to balance electricity supply and demand during peak consumption periods. For example, the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station in the UK, under construction since 2017 and expected to be completed by 2030, has cost tens of billions of pounds; the National Energy System Operator (NESO) estimates that the long-term cost of grid upgrades could be around $119 billion. In contrast, VPPs can bring flexible capacity online within weeks rather than years by leveraging existing assets, reducing reliance on new infrastructure and fossil fuel peaker plants.
Axle's network has already demonstrated tangible results: when thousands of home batteries or smart thermostats respond in coordination, the impact on the grid is significant, while users barely notice the adjustments. Participants who opt into the network earn an average of about £10 (equivalent to $13.44) per month, with participants collectively earning millions of pounds last year. Karl Bach, CEO and co-founder of Axle Energy, stated that millions of electric vehicle chargers, home batteries, and heat pumps already possess flexible capacity, but most of it remains untapped. Virtual power plants unlock this capacity, supporting the grid during peak demand while reducing balancing costs and rewarding participating consumers.

Tyler Lancaster, partner at lead investor Energize Capital, noted that the firm has studied the VPP market for a decade, and Axle brings a comprehensive vision, an experienced team, and a scalable business model. Zhenya Loginov, partner at Accel, believes flexibility will become a key layer in modern energy architecture, and Axle has already become one of the industry leaders with over 300,000 connected devices and more than 2 GW of capacity. Axle estimates that there are approximately 75 million eligible energy assets across Europe and the US, with a potential capacity of about 375 GW, but broader adoption is needed to convert this theoretical pool into usable flexibility. Karl emphasized that as artificial intelligence and electrification drive rising electricity demand, virtual power plants can help modern grids better utilize existing infrastructure, reducing the need to build expensive new capacity.
