The farm spans over 2,000 hectares.

The installation includes a ground-mounted 4.89 MW solar photovoltaic array paired with a 20 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), currently under construction. Upon completion, the system will supply power to farm sites via approximately 17 kilometers of medium-voltage (MV) distribution network.

According to RenEnergy, based on current market data and supplier intelligence, the 20 MWh BESS at Belle Rive is the largest privately contracted, purpose-built energy storage system deployed for an off-grid agricultural operation in South Africa. The company cited the 2025 market intelligence report from non-profit organization GreenCape, which indicated that the entire behind-the-meter energy storage market in South Africa's commercial, industrial, and agricultural (CI&A) sector is expected to stabilize at approximately 400 MWh of new additions annually. Thus, a single 20 MWh privately contracted agricultural installation represents 5% of the country's annual CI&A energy storage deployment.

The farm's operational area exceeding 2,000 hectares forms the core of the engineering challenge. RenEnergy emphasized that distributing reliable, uninterrupted power to irrigation systems, cold storage rooms, packing facilities, and processing infrastructure operating on a diverse multi-crop production cycle over such distances requires a system architecture fundamentally different from compact commercial and industrial (C&I) or logistics installations. The company further noted that the Belle Rive energy system is designed to deliver energy continuity at an agricultural scale, matching the distances and load variability required by commercial farming.

Belle Rive Farm grows seed potatoes, table potatoes, pecans, onions, and corn, and is considered a production base with a hard dependency on energy continuity throughout the seasonal cycle. During peak periods, irrigation systems, cold storage, and processing infrastructure operate continuously, with seasonal windows that do not allow for power interruptions.

The company explained that the investment was driven by escalating grid cost exposure. After increases of 18.65% in 2023 and 12.72% in 2024, South Africa's state-owned power utility Eskom raised tariffs for direct customers by 12.74% in April 2025, followed by an additional 8.76% effective April 1 this year. Electricity accounts for approximately 6% of total agricultural production input costs nationally, a figure that rises significantly for operations with substantial cold chain and irrigation loads.

"We've reached a point where the question is no longer whether to invest in energy independence, but how quickly we can achieve it. Our operations span vast farmland—when managing cold storage and irrigation at this scale, power interruptions are not an option. This installation allows us to plan and operate with certainty, without facing that risk," said Stanley de Beer, owner of Belle Rive Farm.

At Belle Rive, the scale and complexity of farm operations make this particularly critical. RenEnergy's engineering team conducted half-hourly consumption analysis across multiple supply points, analyzed load behavior during seasonal agricultural cycles, and evaluated major farm equipment before finalizing the system configuration. The company stated that the 20 MWh BESS capacity reflects the farm's need to sustain critical loads during nighttime and extended overcast periods without relying on diesel or the Eskom grid.

Juandré Pitout, Head of Business Development at RenEnergy, said: "Delivering a 20 MWh off-grid system across over 2,000 hectares of active farmland is not a standard task. The demand profile of commercial agriculture is fundamentally different from logistics or manufacturing—it is seasonal, operationally critical, and intolerant of interruptions. What makes Belle Rive significant is not just the size of the BESS, but what that size must accomplish: maintaining cold chains, irrigation, and processing running continuously across the entire farm. This is what true energy independence looks like for South African agriculture."

He concluded that Belle Rive Farm's decision to go fully off-grid reflects an emerging pattern in large-scale commercial agricultural operations in South Africa, emphasizing that energy is no longer an operational cost to be managed incrementally, but a capital investment with clear returns, long asset life, and a direct impact on competitive vitality.
