en.Wedoany.com Reported - Australian battery materials company Sicona Battery Technologies (Sicona) has secured up to AUD 45 million in funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) for the construction of a commercial demonstration plant for silicon-carbon anode materials. India's Himadri Speciality Chemical Ltd. is an investor in the company.

The funding, sourced from ARENA's Battery Innovation Initiative, will be used to build and operate a commercial demonstration plant at BlueScope Steel's Port Kembla facility in New South Wales, to mass-produce Sicona's self-developed SiCx silicon-carbon anode products. These products are primarily designed for electric vehicle and energy storage batteries, effectively enhancing overall cell performance.

The demonstration project aims to accelerate the commercialization of Sicona's technology while strengthening Himadri Speciality Chemical Ltd.'s global footprint in the high-end battery materials sector. Himadri has long focused on lithium battery and specialty carbon materials, and this investment in Sicona is a key step in extending its clean energy and battery industry chain.

According to ARENA data, this silicon-carbon anode technology can increase lithium battery energy density by up to 20% and improve charging speed by 40% compared to traditional graphite anodes. The materials can be directly adapted to existing lithium battery production lines without requiring large-scale equipment modifications.

The demonstration plant will complete the large-scale validation of the self-developed process while providing certification samples for global battery manufacturers and automotive OEMs, laying the foundation for subsequent long-term offtake agreements and mass production.

With the continuous growth of global electric vehicle demand, many countries are accelerating the construction of domestic battery industry chains and the iteration of key material technologies. This funding confirms this trend. For Himadri Speciality Chemical Ltd., this collaboration highlights the strategic value of its investments in cutting-edge battery technologies, aligning with its long-term goal of becoming a global supplier of high-end clean energy materials.

Silicon-carbon anodes are regarded by the industry as an important technological direction in the lithium battery field, offering both high energy density and fast-charging advantages while being compatible with existing manufacturing systems. As global battery manufacturers seek to improve range, charging efficiency, and overall cell performance, Sicona's silicon-carbon anode technology is poised to play a significant role in the next generation of electric mobility.
