en.Wedoany.com Reported - Kontron Transportation has secured a contract from Infraestruturas de Portugal, the Portuguese railway and road infrastructure manager, to overhaul the country's central railway communication network. The project focuses on radio infrastructure critical to railway operations and is seen as a significant step toward the future European FRMCS system.

Kontron Transportation, a company specializing in communication solutions for rail transport, will serve as the new supplier for the radio communication infrastructure of Portugal's railway network, carrying out the system overhaul. The specific contract amount was not disclosed. The company stated that this project is a key step toward FRMCS (Future Railway Mobile Communication System), a technology that will gradually replace the current GSM-R system in European railway networks. The new standard will support mission-critical train communications as well as advanced digital applications related to signaling, automation, and traffic management.

In Portugal, the project aims to transform the existing central communication network to meet the future needs of rail transport. Kontron Transportation believes the contract confirms its ability to deliver mission-critical railway communication solutions adapted to next-generation technologies. The project scope includes the supply, installation, configuration, testing, commissioning, and migration of new Kontron Transportation solutions, with the company also providing training, documentation, maintenance, and operational support. To ensure a smooth transition, the new system will be integrated with the existing infrastructure and applications of the Portuguese railway manager.

Kontron Transportation stated that the project strengthens its position in the Portuguese railway market and expands its role in the modernization of railway communication networks. Managing Director Richard Neussl noted that the company is proud to support the modernization of Portugal's railway communication infrastructure, highlighting the project's commitment to providing reliable, future-proof communication systems for critical railway operations.

Railway communication networks are essential for safety and operational continuity, ensuring connectivity between operational staff, control centers, trains, and technical infrastructure systems. The modernization of these networks is becoming increasingly important in the context of European rail transport digitalization and preparation for FRMCS. For Kontron Transportation, the Portuguese contract also offers an opportunity to expand its portfolio of solutions in the access infrastructure domain and support railway operators in transitioning to next-generation communication technologies. Kontron AG, an Austrian IoT technology company with approximately 7,000 employees across more than 20 countries, provides solutions for critical sectors including transportation, industry, communications, and energy.
