SK Telecom Continues SIM Security Saga With ‘Reset’ Technology

Wedoany.com Report-May 12, SK Telecom, a South Korean telecommunications provider, has launched a SIM Reset solution designed to block illegal SIM duplication by updating user identification and authentication information without replacing the physical SIM card. This method enhances security by rendering previously leaked SIM data unusable, effectively preventing unauthorized system access while maintaining network functionality equivalent to a SIM replacement.

The SIM Reset solution preserves user data, such as financial certificates, T-money, and contact information, eliminating the need for re-authentication with financial institutions or resetting applications. Available for both physical SIM and eSIM users, it offers a convenient alternative to traditional SIM replacement. SK Telecom noted that the solution provides the same security benefits as a new SIM card but with greater ease of use, allowing customers to choose based on their preferences.

SK Telecom plans to offer the SIM Reset solution to customers visiting T World stores after receiving SIM replacement notifications, with potential expansion in the future. Starting May 12, when SIM card inventory increases, the company will enhance reservation scheduling for SIM replacements. Additionally, SK Telecom is improving access to eSIM self-activation to meet customer needs efficiently.

The company validated the SIM Reset technology in collaboration with the 6G Forum and the Open RAN Industry Alliance (ORIA), mobile communication research organizations, confirming its effectiveness ahead of implementation.
