This milestone was achieved over a quarter ahead of schedule, less than six months after the project officially commenced in January 2026. This wafer fab is the first phase of Micron's New York semiconductor manufacturing campus, which will be used to produce advanced DRAM memory chips in the future.

This concrete pour signifies the beginning of the factory's foundation and main building structure. In earlier phases, the construction team had advanced site leveling, underground utilities, roads, and other campus infrastructure. With the initial foundation completed, subsequent construction will gradually shift to the wafer fab's main structure, cleanrooms, and production support facilities. The New York State government referred to this milestone as the project's turning point from preliminary site work to full vertical construction.

The project is being undertaken by multiple engineering firms. Bechtel is responsible for the engineering, procurement, and construction collaboration for the first wafer fab, Jacobs handles architectural and engineering design, and Gilbane is in charge of early construction and site infrastructure. During peak construction, the project will require thousands of specialized construction workers, driving demand for electromechanical installation, cleanrooms, specialty materials, and semiconductor equipment support.

Micron plans to build up to four wafer fabs at the New York campus, with a long-term project scale of $100 billion. Once fully completed, the campus will become one of the largest semiconductor manufacturing bases in the United States, forming an integrated production system encompassing wafer fabrication, utilities, and supply chain support. Micron estimates the project will create approximately 50,000 direct and indirect jobs in New York State, including 9,000 company positions.

Large memory chip factories require not only cleanrooms but also stable power, industrial water, wastewater treatment, gas supply, and transportation facilities. New York State has incorporated transmission lines, power supply, water supply, sewage treatment, transportation, and sustainable facility expansion into regional supporting plans to meet the long-term operational needs of multiple wafer fabs.

To date, Micron and Gilbane have arranged approximately $675 million in contracts with New York State contractors, suppliers, and subcontractors during the early site work phase, accounting for over half of the awarded contract value. More than 80% of on-site construction workers are from New York State. With the start of main construction, the project will continue to advance factory structures, utilities, and production infrastructure. However, the timeline for cleanroom equipment installation and the first wafer fab's production launch will depend on subsequent engineering schedules.
