en.Wedoany.com Reported - TÜV SÜD and MEDHA have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further expand technical cooperation with Indian Railways in the field of hydrogen-powered rail vehicles.

This agreement follows the approval and commercial operation of India's first domestically manufactured hydrogen-electric train, reflecting the commitment of all parties to safe, sustainable, and future-oriented railway technology. Between 2024 and 2026, the two parties collaborated on India's first flagship hydrogen railway project, successfully developing the first hydrogen-electric train set and obtaining operational approval. The project also included the construction of dedicated hydrogen production and refueling facilities, which have now received operational authorization from Indian Railways. In this collaboration, MEDHA was responsible for integrating the hydrogen fuel cell-based propulsion system into the existing diesel-electric multiple unit platform, and conducted static and dynamic tests, as well as oscillation and performance trials on the train. TÜV SÜD performed independent safety assessments of the hydrogen system, traction battery system, and hydrogen production and refueling infrastructure, helping the project meet stringent safety and operational standards for hydrogen applications.

Building on the success of the first hydrogen train, the two parties have deepened their partnership through the newly signed MoU. Future cooperation will focus on scaling up the application of hydrogen-powered railway technology and continuing to provide independent, comprehensive safety assessment services for subsequent railway projects in India. As hydrogen becomes an increasingly important alternative energy source for railway operations, this collaboration aims to support the safe deployment of advanced propulsion systems and related supporting facilities.

TÜV SÜD is a leading testing, inspection, and certification service provider. Its railway business division offers certification services covering the entire lifecycle of railways to manufacturers, operators, authorities, and contractors worldwide. With over 550 railway experts globally, TÜV SÜD's scope includes high-speed rail, conventional rail, metro systems, and urban transit. In addition to testing and certification, the company provides expert consulting to help ensure the safe integration of complex railway systems and infrastructure. Simon Lemin, CEO of TÜV SÜD South Asia, stated: "The approval of India's first hydrogen-powered train is a significant step towards clean, sustainable transportation. We are proud to support this pioneering project with our independent safety assessment expertise and look forward to continued cooperation with MEDHA and Indian Railways." Sumit Singhal, Senior Vice President of TÜV SÜD South Asia, added: "The application of hydrogen in railways presents extremely complex safety challenges. We appreciate the trust placed in us by MEDHA and Indian Railways and will further strengthen our future collaboration."

The expanded partnership between TÜV SÜD, MEDHA, and Indian Railways underscores India's growing commitment to hydrogen-powered rail transport. By combining engineering innovation with rigorous safety assessments, this partnership lays a solid foundation for future clean transportation projects, helping to support Indian Railways' long-term operational goals of sustainability, reliability, and environmental responsibility.
