The equipment was installed in April this year, passed final testing in May, and is now operational under Epson's local partner, Altron Document Solutions, which handles implementation and customer support in the region.
In recent years, digital label printing has become a key component of the packaging industry in Europe, North America, and Asia, but its adoption in Africa has been relatively slow, with most label production still relying on traditional flexographic processes. Brand owners are seeing growing demand for diverse, small-batch labels, retailers are expanding their private-label portfolios, and increasingly stringent regulations, along with frequent promotional activities and seasonal packaging updates, are putting greater pressure on converters to deliver higher production flexibility while maintaining quality and turnaround times.
Gareth Jay, Sales Director for Epson Africa, stated that the introduction of this equipment directly responds to changing customer needs. "The printing industry is seeing a clear rise in demand for short-run and personalized output, and label production is no exception. The SurePress helps customers respond to this trend with greater flexibility, consistency, and control, while maintaining stable print quality across a wider range of substrates." He noted that as product lines become increasingly fragmented, a single product range may require multiple label variants to suit different packaging sizes, export destinations, regulatory requirements, languages, or promotional campaigns. Converters are managing a growing number of jobs, many of which are no longer suited to traditional high-volume production models.
Digital printing reduces the setup processes associated with conventional methods, allowing converters to switch between jobs more efficiently and produce only the quantities actually needed. This lowers the risk of inventory obsolescence and helps brands respond faster to market changes. "Crucially, it makes short-run printing commercially viable, enabling local businesses to avoid the upfront costs and operational constraints of mass production," Gareth said. "Suppliers can now produce high-quality labels locally, supplying flexibly based on actual demand."
For Altron Document Solutions, the platform serves both existing converters and companies looking to expand into the label sector. Keith Knott, Head of Production Systems at the company, said: "Our partnership with Epson allows us to bring proven technology to the market, combining our 60 years of local experience with a shared commitment to reliability. The value lies in turning reliability into commercial flexibility, helping local print providers make label jobs as small as 500 sheets profitable, without the pressure of high-volume minimum order quantities."
The SurePress platform integrates features designed for demanding label applications, including water-based inks for improved compatibility with a variety of substrates, better drying performance on film materials, a wider color gamut, and automatic maintenance functions aimed at enhancing production efficiency and consistency. Meanwhile, this launch is part of Epson's increased investment in South Africa. The company recently opened the Johannesburg Innovation Centre, offering customers and partners access to industrial and commercial printing technology demonstrations, training resources, and application development support.
Digital label printing will not completely replace traditional flexography, but its role in converter operations is expected to continue growing as product portfolios become more diverse and lead times shorten. Sustainability is also a key consideration: on-demand production reduces overproduction, minimizes waste, and prevents obsolete inventory from entering the supply chain. Epson stated that the SurePress platform is developed in line with its "Sho-Sho-Sei" philosophy, focusing on efficient, compact, and precise product design.
