AMADA AMERICA Chief Operating Officer Jason Hillenbrand believes that welding is the final manufacturing step metal fabrication companies need to address to optimize production processes. He cited an example where a customer expressed concerns about the output of a laser welding system, but the AMADA team discovered that insufficient precision in the bending department was the root cause. After the company installed a higher-precision bending machine, it reduced reliance on fixtures and specialized tooling, saving process time. The customer recovered the investment cost of the laser welding system within approximately 12 months.

The application of laser welding in metal fabrication stands out in terms of efficiency and quality. Terry Wurzer of Iowa Customs in Iowa noted that the company's bumper production for Peterbilt increased from approximately 4 units per person per day to 6 units per hour, equivalent to 40 to 50 units per day. Ryan Mongeau, Vice President of Manufacturing at Space Age Electronics in Massachusetts, explained that after the company invested in a fiber laser welding system, it cleared a backlog of parts orders that had accumulated over nine months within 90 days, and subsequently received a new order for 10,000 components. The scrap rate for this component, previously manually TIG welded, exceeded 80%, but dropped to 2% after adopting laser welding, with no need for subsequent grinding or finishing.

He pointed out that handheld fiber welding systems have already demonstrated the advantages of laser welding over MIG or TIG to the industry, and as the shortage of welding labor intensifies, the demand for automation will further drive the industry toward laser welding.
