NASA and SpaceX Introduce Laser Communications for Artemis III Mission

en.Wedoany.com Reported - NASA, in collaboration with SpaceX, is introducing laser communications capabilities for the Artemis III mission, enabling the Orion spacecraft to transmit 4K video and images at high speeds during critical tests for future astronaut lunar landings.

Through this technology, NASA plans to transmit enhanced real-time footage from the Orion spacecraft. During the mission, the four-person Artemis III crew will use a test version of the commercial human landing system to perform a rendezvous and docking demonstration—a key step required for NASA to return astronauts to the Moon by 2028.

For the mission, NASA will install two SpaceX Starlink Mini laser terminals on the exterior of the Orion spacecraft to supplement the existing communications system. These terminals, which utilize laser crosslink technology developed for the Starlink satellite constellation, will send 4K video, images, and mission data to NASA's Johnson Space Center mission control in Houston.

Compared to traditional radio frequency communications, optical or laser communications use invisible infrared light to transmit more data in a single downlink, thereby increasing bandwidth and enabling higher-quality transmissions.

This demonstration on Artemis III builds on NASA's successful use of optical communications during the Artemis II mission. At that time, as long as the spacecraft was within line of sight of ground terminals, NASA transmitted high-definition video, voice communications, flight procedures, engineering data, scientific information, and images from Orion to Earth via laser signals.

SpaceX first demonstrated its laser communications capability for NASA during the Fram2 crewed mission in 2025, conducted under a funded Space Act Agreement to develop commercial satellite relay services. The Starlink Mini terminals selected for Artemis III are based on more than 25,000 laser links currently operational within the Starlink satellite network, which SpaceX also uses to provide real-time video and telemetry data during Starship flight tests.

The Artemis III laser communications demonstration is being advanced in collaboration with NASA's Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) program and its Communications Services Project. This initiative expands NASA's existing partnership with SpaceX while supporting the agency's broader strategy to commercialize satellite relay services for missions in near-Earth space.
