(CEO Lee Young-jo) announced on the 20th that it has obtained a permit for the Hainan Hwawon Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) power generation project, with a total investment of 150 billion won, and will formally proceed with project construction. Located near the Hwawon Substation in Hainan County, South Jeolla Province, the project has an equipment capacity of 96 megawatts (MW) and a battery capacity of 576 megawatt-hours (MWh), making it a long-duration energy storage system.

The permit was issued by the Electric Committee of the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment. Previously, Korea Midland Power had been selected as the preferred negotiation partner by the Korea Power Exchange in the "2nd ESS Central Contract Market Competitive Bidding." With the permit secured, the project has entered a critical implementation phase. After completing subsequent administrative procedures, Korea Midland Power plans to begin construction in December of this year, with the goal of completing and commencing commercial operation by December 2027.

In the South Jeolla region, the rapid growth of renewable energy generation facilities such as solar power has led to frequent output control issues due to insufficient transmission and distribution grid capacity. The Hainan Hwawon BESS will store surplus electricity during the day and release it during peak power demand periods, thereby regulating grid load and enhancing the stability of the Honam region's power grid.

Korea Midland Power CEO Lee Young-jo stated that with the Korean government promoting three major super projects and others, the importance of stable power supply and battery energy storage systems is increasingly highlighted. The company will smoothly advance the project to contribute to achieving the 2030 National Greenhouse Gas Reduction Target (NDC) and the transition to carbon-free energy.
